This Week at Calvin
Calvin Christian Reformed Church is being transformed into Athens, Greece. At Vacation Bible School, Calvin will pretend to go on a trip back to Bible times. The sanctuary, narthex, and fellowship hall will be decorated with tall columns, the rolling hills, the blue sea and a mural much like the Parthenon showing God Sightings from all the participants through out the week. All will hear about the Apostle Paul's stay in Athens from God's Word, the Bible. Paul is staying in Athens on his dangerous journey to share the truth; that there's one God who loves us all. This is dangerous for the Apostle Paul because people in Athens don't believe in God or God's, Son, Jesus. Some people have wanted to hurt Paul along his journey. We will gather in families as Oikoi (families in Greek) with Greek names such as Antioch, Corinth, Philippi and Ephesus.
We'll try some Greek dancing to the theme song "Yes, It's True," set Bible verses to melodies we can always remember, play Arena Games like the Olympics, visit Paul in prison and hide from an angry mob threatening Paul, write sins on colorful handprints, and place the hands on a cross as all remember that God sent his Son, Jesus to take the punishment for their sins.
VBS at Calvin begins this Sunday at 5:30 PM until 8:15 each evening through Wednesday. Come and join us in this memorable community wide event. There will be donations made to the Christian Needs Center in Le Mars. However, we will still have the competition between the boys and girls collections. Whoever wins gets to give a pie in the face of the losing team. Who will it be this year? We'll find out at the Finale on Wednesday evening at the closing.
Call the church secretary's office to get signed up early. The phone number is 546-4767.
This Sunday morning Pastor Rev. Dr. Nevada DeLapp will continue his sermon series on the Lord's Prayer. The phrase he is focusing on is "Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors." Pastor DeLapp will use Matthew 18: 23 - 35 as his text from The Bible. Other scripture read will be 1 John 1: 5 - 10 read by John Klocksiem. Psalm 51: 1 - 7 will be read responsively by Pastor and the congregation.
Miriam Hector will lead all into a spirit of worship with a prelude of "Amazing Grace" with "Ash Grove" on the grand piano. The offertory will be "Your Grace is Enough" with "Grace Greater than Our Sin". The hymns selected for the sermon on forgiveness will be "Mighty To Save" "How Blest Are They Whose Trespass", "Change My Heart, O God", and "Freely, Freely".
Greeters this Sunday are Anna Mae Koerselman and Steve Ver Mulm, Coffee Servers are Gary & Glenda Habben, Usher is Fred Vollink, Nursery is supervised by Kariin DeLapp, Sound System run to Steve Ver Mulm and the Power Point is set up and run by Jeremy Kamp. We thank these people for their service.
Calvin's Women's Ministry is planning on a fun adventure as they leave June 28th for a Mystery Outing. Be prepared to have fun, wear comfortable shoes, bring cash for lunch, meet at church at 8:30, and sign up on the sheet in back of church.
Calvin is a building at 326 7th St SE, but our Calvin people make up our church. We meet on Sundays to prepare our hearts for ministry through out the week. Come join us as we build God's kingdom here on earth.
