This Week at Calvin

Calvin Church along with all the Protestant Churches of the world celebrate Ascension Day this week. People often wonder what difference Christ's ascension makes. The Heidelberg Catechism, written to answer this and so many other questions of the faith, teaches us about the ascension in Q&A 49. Even though it was written in 1563, its summary of Scripture rings as true today as it did then, regardless of our particular denominational affiliation.
Q: How does Christ's ascension to heaven benefit us?
A: First, he is our advocate in heaven in the presence of his Father. (Romans 8:34, 1 John 2:1)
Second, we have our own flesh in heaven as a sure pledge that Christ our head will also take us, his members, up to himself. (John 14:2, Ephesians 2: 4-6)
Third, he sends his Spirit to us on earth as a corresponding pledge. (John 14:16, 2 Corinthians 1:21-22, 5:5)
By the Spirit's power we seek not earthly things but the things above, where Christ is, sitting at God's right hand. (Colossians 3: 1-4)

June 2nd Calvin Church will worship at the same time as it has all year long, at 10:15 AM. Worship will begin with a prelude of "Here I Am To Worship/Crown Him with Many Crowns and He Is Exalted" by Miriam Hector on the grand piano. The All For Him Band will lead the singing of "Before the Throne of God Above", "He Leadeth Me" "Be Thou My Vision" and "Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us". This Sunday we will hear the Ten Commandments as Moses heard them from God and wrote them on 2 tablets of stone on Mount Sinai. They are recorded in Exodus 20: 1 - 17. Pastor Rev. Dr. Nevada DeLapp's message this week will be on the phrase "Thy Will Be Done" from The Lord's Prayer. This will be based on the Gospel of Luke 22: 39 - 46. Following the message we will recite together the Q&A 124 from the Heidelberg Catechism regarding "Thy Will Be Done". The offertory will have the contemporary song by Hillary Scott played entitled "Thy Will."

Calvin Church loves to do Vacation Bible School in this community for anyone who would love to attend. This year children are grouped in families called Oikos since we are going to Athens, Greece, where the Apostle Paul briefly stayed on his second missionary journey. Each evening begins with a meal at 5:30 PM followed by Celebration songs, Bible stories and Bible Points, Arena Games, Paul's Adventures, crafts in the Marketplace and closing with a Celebration Time ending at 8:a5 PM> Dates for all this fun are Sunday, June 23rd through Wednesday, June 26th.
